You’ve moved into your new home and are ready to bring it to life with furniture and decor. Maybe you’ve already set a budget, maybe you’re still vacillating between styles, or maybe you just want to find out which one suits you. The truth is, while we love to dream of gorgeous, perfectly coordinated interiors, there’s always the question: How much does it cost to furnish an apartment?? In the lines below, you will learn more about vintage, modern and spartan styles, with advantages and limitations, so that you can choose the balance between aesthetics and budget.

From dream to reality: how do you choose your style?

It's not a universal truth that one style is better than another; each one comes with its own specifics, a unique charm, and, of course, a different financial investment.

I remember when I bought a new apartment in Brașov city, I spent a lot of time thinking about the decor. I ranged from the idea of a retro reading corner filled with objects from flea markets to a minimalist concept with clean lines and neutral colors. Then I tried the idea of having a completely empty bedroom, with the mattress on the floor, in a spartan style. Each option appealed to me, but I didn't know how to properly evaluate the costs. In the end, How much does it cost to furnish an apartment? It's not just a number written on paper; it depends on each person's preferences and how we want to feel at home.

Vintage style: when the past becomes a source of inspiration

It captivates you with the charm of vintage objects, with warm textures and pastel colors. If you like looking for furniture pieces with a story, then the vintage style can be a charming choice. I discovered a restored 50-year-old wardrobe at a fair, which became the centerpiece of my living room.

Advantages:

  • Maximum originality: each piece has a unique history and personality.
  • The possibility of creating a warm, welcoming space, full of interesting details.
  • Many retro items can be purchased at affordable prices at antique fairs or even online, if you have the patience to search and negotiate.

Limitations:

  • Old objects may need to be restored, and this process can be quite expensive, especially if they require special treatments (wood reconditioning, reupholstery, etc.).
  • It may require more time to search, as you don't always have a diverse range of identical pieces available, like in large furniture stores.
  • There is a risk of visually overloading the space with too many details if you are not careful about how you combine the pieces.

How much does it cost to furnish a vintage apartment?

It depends a lot on the condition of the pieces you find. You can find bargains for 200-300 lei for a retro table, but if you want an old piano just for decoration, it can cost thousands of lei. Restoration can also be expensive, and the total budget can become unpredictable.

Modern style: technology, functionality and clean lines

If you're like me, a die-hard fan of modular furniture, then the modern style probably suits you. As soon as I bought a smart coffee machine, I said I had to place it in a minimal and balanced setting, so I invested in a kitchen with glossy fronts, LED lighting and built-in appliances.

Advantages:

  • Simple lines and clear design, which makes maintenance very easy.
  • Modular furniture can be easily adapted to the space, optimizing every square meter.
  • There are numerous options for high-tech furniture and accessories (smart TVs, phone-controlled lighting, wireless charging items, etc.).

Limitations:

  • A too "cold" look if you don't carefully choose the color palette and textures.
  • It can get expensive if you go for designer pieces or cutting-edge technologies.
  • Trends in modern design change frequently, so some pieces can quickly lose their original charm.

How much does it cost to furnish a modern apartment?

The budget varies depending on how “techy” you want the space to be. A modern kitchen and living room equipped with quality appliances can cost well over 10,000 lei, and if you opt for brands premium, the costs can double. A minimal style bedroom can be more affordable, starting from 3,000 – 4,000 lei, but it all depends on your preferences and requirements.

Spartan style: less is more

If you dream of an airy space, where only the bare necessities are found, then the spartan-minimalist trend may appeal to you. I think of my friend who for a while slept only on a mattress on the floor, with two pillows and a simple rug, bringing a TV hanging on the wall and a small bedside table. This is how he made room for yoga and meditation.

Advantages:

  • Initial costs can be reduced, because you don't buy a lot of furniture.
  • Maintenance is very simple, less furniture means less cleaning.
  • A very tidy decor, with a calming atmosphere.

Limitations:

  • It might become too austere for some, lacking that "home" feeling, unless you include a few decorative elements.
  • It can create discomfort when you have guests or want to enjoy more storage space.
  • The risk of constantly wanting "more", especially when you see apartments decorated warmly and invitingly in more elaborate styles.

How much does it cost to furnish a spartan apartment?

In theory, it can be the cheapest option, because you reduce all the furniture to a minimum. However, a quality bed, a good mattress and a few (but high-quality) pieces can also cost significantly. It depends on how rigorously you want to follow the concept.

What factors influence the final price?

How much does it cost to furnish an apartment have no standard answer, because it all depends on the following aspects:

  • Space size: A studio apartment will be cheaper to furnish than a new 3-room apartment, but the number of pieces of furniture also differs.
  • Quality of materials: Solid wood, premium fabrics, silent sliding systems — all of these can quickly add up to costs.
  • Customizing: Custom-made furniture may be more expensive, but it offers you perfect adaptation to your space and needs.
  • Home appliances and technology: A refrigerator with smart functions, a state-of-the-art TV, or a smart lighting system adds a substantial addition to the budget.
  • Transportation and assembly costs: Never forget the cost of logistics. Some companies offer free shipping and assembly, others charge significant amounts.

Elections and budgets: how do you decide?

Before you start shopping, make a list of the items you absolutely need. Do you really want a large walk-in closet in your bedroom? Or do you need an ergonomic workspace for your home office? Set a rough budget and see what compromises you're willing to make.

If you like vintage style, set aside money for possible renovations. If you like modern, make sure to integrate the right technologies for your budget. And if you dream of a spartan decor, be prepared to invest in few but good pieces of furniture.

Balance and satisfaction

When I finished furnishing, I realized that the first option that comes to mind is not always the final one. I combined a little vintage (an old display case in the living room), with modern elements in the kitchen (minimalist fronts and smart appliances), plus a slightly spartan spirit in the bedroom (a simple bed, with storage drawers and little else).

Even though I alternated styles, the apartment is coherent and makes me feel good. In short, I managed to keep the idea of how much it costs to furnish an apartment under control only because I researched and carefully chose the important pieces.

Choose with your heart, but also with your reason

Vintage, modern and spartan styles can be combined, adapted or followed exactly. There is no universal recipe; each apartment and each person is unique. Analyze your space, budget and real needs. If you like the warmth of vintage pieces, go for it, but keep in mind the restoration costs. If ultra-modern minimalism wins you over, plan a budget for state-of-the-art appliances. And if you want a super-airy space, the spartan style can be a good start, paying attention to the quality of the basic pieces.

One thing is for sure: with a little information, patience, and a dash of creativity, you can transform your home into your true refuge. As someone once said to me: “It’s not necessarily how much you spend, but how you make yourself feel when you come home.” I think that’s actually the most important question at the end of any interior design project.
